“ This event is the epitome of everything I love about multisport. When I was asked to design the ultimate multisport event, I couldn’t believe my luck. I took the opportunity to re-create what in my experience was the most fun, challenging race format that I had ever competed in and then combine it with the most spectacular and varied terrain on offer. It’s not often I get to race at home anymore. I spend most of my time on the road, and there is no doubt that I get to race in some pretty incredible places. But I can honestly say that this event is still at the top of my list. ”

Braden Currie - RED BULL ATHLETE

THE ROUTE

Red Bull Defiance is made up of seven key stages spread over 2 days. There are also special disciplines that test the teams skills and courage. Each day has a run, bike and water-based activity as its core activity, but the relative difficulty of each is different on each day. There is no doubt that day 1 is the most physically demanding in terms of endurance and how teams ‘race’ day 1 will have a profound impact on how competitors feel for day 2. The course navigates through stunning and varied terrain, taking in stunning rivers, alpine mountains and environments. Competitors that make it to the finish will be able to reflect on the challenge; the intensity and the reward of completing an epic 2 day adventure race against a backdrop of Lake Wanaka, New Zealand.

  • Day 1 (Stages 1 :: 2 :: 3)
  • Day 2 (Stages 4 :: 5 :: 6 :: 7)

A big day for a big race! Teams start with a spectacular paddle down the Clutha River. A succession of rapids will see adrenaline levels rising as teams make their way downstream to the first Transition at Queensbury. The next stage is an epic mountain bike ride taking competitors across top of the Pisa Range with some major elevation gain and a brake eating descent. The finale for Day 1 is the vintage mountain run across Mt Alpha to Roys Peak, giving sensational views across Lake Wanaka to the finish line. This is a massive day of effort but the visual rewards are equal to it and more. Competitors will have to leave enough in the tank for Day 2.

Four stages to savour on Day 2, with more focus on technical skills rather than the endurance and effort of Day 1 (though teams will have a full day of racing in their legs already). Day 2 kicks off with an early morning, fast and fun, mountain bike along the Motatapu River with bike lights blazing. From the end of this stage competitors are on to the Matukituki River to complete a stunning paddle towards West Wanaka. A quick transition and then a run around Rocky Mountain and a special activities. The final stage of Red Bull Defiance is back on to mountain bikes, bringing teams back to the finish line at Glendhu Station. Those who make it will be rewarded with a real sense of achievement.
