" The Clutha River is an iconic Grade II river that kicks off Red Bull Defiance Wanaka in breathtaking style. More rapids and fun to be had with the course heading further down the river to Queensbury. "

Adrian Bailey - COURSE DIRECTOR

STAGE 1 - KAYAK (x1/X2) Canoe (x4)

Red Bull Defiance competitors begin their two day New Zealand adventure with a fantastic whitewater paddle down the mighty Clutha River – the second longest river in New Zealand and the longest in the South Island. X1 solos and X2 tandems will race down the river in kayaks. X4 teams will use inflatable canoes. Despite the apparent length of the stage, the river moves swiftly and competitors will cover the river distance quickly, with a succession of rapids keeping the mind focused. The bottom section of the river has a number of notable Grade II rapids that will set the pulse racing.¬†Expect to see a mixture of exhilaration and enjoyment on competitor faces as they begin their quest to Defy the Odds. It’s important not to go too hard, let the river do the work, there is long day ahead!
